The Reggio-Emilia Approach: What Is It and How Does It Inform Our Philosophy at International School?

Strong. Capable. Resilient. These three words encapsulate how the Reggio-Emilia Approach characterises every child. Children brim with wonder about the world around them, fuelled by boundless curiosity to explore their place in it. At International School, this philosophy underpins our Early Years Foundation Stage approach and informs the structure of primary-level activities. It’s crucial to note that Reggio-Emilia is not a curriculum; rather, our curriculum builds upon these foundational values, much like the layers of the Earth.

Where Does It Come From?

The Reggio-Emilia Approach originated in the town of Reggio Emilia, Italy, as part of a progressive, cooperative early childhood education movement. Distinctive to its region, it is not a standardised method. There are no official international training programmes for becoming a “Reggio-Emilia teacher.” Schools, preschools, and homeschool settings adopting this philosophy are referred to as “Reggio-inspired,” tailoring the approach to meet the specific needs of their communities and curricula.

This flexibility is key. The Reggio-Emilia Approach values individuality, recognising that every community, child, teacher, and parent is unique. Consequently, no two Reggio-inspired environments should look identical. Shaped by the specific needs, interests, and experiences of children, the approach remains dynamic and contextually responsive.Although primarily applied in preschools, the principles of Reggio-Emilia—such as child-centred learning, creativity, and collaboration—are adaptable for older students and everyday parenting practices.

How Does the Reggio-Emilia Approach View the Child?

  • Capable Learners: Children are more than capable of driving their learning within a nurturing environment, motivated by their interests to discover more about the world.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Interaction with others is vital. Children seek knowledge collaboratively, sharing their thoughts and questions, which are valued by their peers and mentors.
  • Natural Communicators: Through play, children explore language—rhythm, rhyme, pronunciation, and intonation—creating joy and connection.
  • Partners in Learning: Children and adults embark on a shared learning journey. Adults do not simply instruct but guide and discover alongside the child.

What Role Does the Classroom Environment Play?

The concept of the classroom as the “third teacher” originates from the Reggio-Emilia Approach. A Reggio-inspired classroom is characterised by natural light, order, and beauty, often incorporating materials like wood to enhance its aesthetic.

  • Evolving Spaces: The classroom grows and transforms, much like a seed, blossoming by the school year’s end.
  • Shared Responsibility: Both adults and children maintain the environment’s cleanliness and order, ensuring it remains inviting.
  • The Piazza: Central to a Reggio-inspired learning environment is the “piazza,” a communal space where children interact and collaborate. At , the Early Learning Village features a piazza in the heart of the classrooms, fostering connections and creativity.

What Is the Role of the Teacher?

Reggio-inspired teachers act as guides and facilitators rather than traditional instructors.

เป็นหนังสือที่คุณวีรพร Ȩติประภาได้รวบรวมบันทึกการเลี้ยงดู “มนุษย์ลูก” อย่างเข้าใจและเต็มไปด้วยความรักที่ไม่พยายามครอบครองหรือควบคุมชีวิตลูก แต่ยืนเคียงข้างอย่างเข้าใจและปล่อยให้ลูกได้เติบโตเป็นตัวของตัวเอง

หนังสือเน้นว่าการเลี้ยงลูกไม่ใช่แค่การสอนเด็ก แต่เป็นกระบวนการที่พ่อแม่เองก็ต้องเรียนรู้และเติบโตไปพร้อมๆ กัน โดยเฉพาะการยอมรับความไม่สมบูรณ์แบบของตัวเองและลูก

ความ๶ข้าใจตัวตนของลูก
ลูกเป็น “มนุษย์” ที่มีความคิด ความฝัน และตัวตนของเขาเอง พ่อแม่ควรรับฟังและเปิดโอกาสให้ลูกแสดงออกอย่างแท้จริง ไม่บังคับให้เขาต้องเดินในเส้นทางที่พ่อแม่ขีดไว้

ไม่จำเป็Ȩ้องสมบูรณ์แบบ
คุณวีรพรเน้นย้ำว่าความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างพ่อแม่ลูกไม่ต้องสมบูรณ์แบบเสมอไป ความผิดพลาด ความไม่เข้าใจกัน คือส่วนหนึ่งของการเรียนรู้และเติบโตไปด้วยกัน

“Please Embrace Your Child”

This book is one of the treasured titles in our library, carefully placed in the section we hope all parents will have the chance to explore. Veenaporn Nitiprapha has delicately compiled reflections on raising “human children” with understanding and a profound love—one that does not seek to possess or control their lives but instead stands beside them, supporting and allowing them to grow into their authentic selves.

Veenaporn does not provide rigid answers about what constitutes good parenting. Instead, she invites us to reflect on the parent-child relationship through the lens of love, understanding, and gentle release. If summarised succinctly, the essence of the book can be expressed as follows:

Parenting is about embracing, not possessing

Parents should provide love and space for children to grow freely. They must avoid controlling or confining their children to meet their own expectations.

Growing alongside your child

The book highlights that raising children is not simply about teaching them but is also a process through which parents themselves must learn and grow. This includes accepting their own imperfections and those of their children.

Understanding a child’s identity

Children are “hܳԲ” with their own thoughts, dreams, and identities. Parents should listen to them and provide opportunities for genuine self-expression, rather than forcing them onto a path predetermined by their parents’ aspirations.

Letting go with kindness

The role of a parent is to “e” their child with warmth and let go when the time is right for the child to move forward. Parents must learn to trust their children and allow them to face life on their own terms.

Perfection is not required

Veenaporn emphasises that the parent-child relationship need not be perfect. Mistakes and misunderstandings are simply part of learning and growing together.

In the closing chapter, Veenaporn writes, “No one lives forever.” With just this one sentence, we are reminded to offer nothing but goodness to one another. Life is short, and in this uncertain world, there is no reason to waste time pressuring or hurting one another. By the end of this book, we are gently urged to embrace imperfection and offer mindful love to “human children” so they can flourish beautifully, in their own way.

Emotional Development in Early Years: Building Emotional Literacy and Self-Love for Lifelong Success

“An emotion is your brain’s interpretation of bodily sensations in relation to what is happening around you in the world.”

There is a very famous 1960s Beatles song that states, “Love is all you need.” This concept remains as relevant for younger generations today as it was then. In the context of early years education, a strong foundation built on love is essential. At , we believe that to be successful and happy in life, it is important to develop emotional literacy and self-love, as these underpin all our social interactions and enable us to accept ourselves and others as we grow into well-balanced adults.

 

Our Approach to Early Years  Emotional Development

Our early years specialist teachers understand that, to love and be loved, children need the following from adults:

  • Respect
  • Support
  • Trust
  • Care
  • Boundaries
  • To be seen
  • Safety
  • Space to grow
  • Acceptance
  • Love expressed through actions
  • Presence when it matters most

Behaviour and the Brain

“If you want a single reason to be patient with your child when they are being unreasonable in some way, this is it: your child’s brain isn’t fully formed yet, and they are, at times, literally incapable of controlling their emotions and body.” — Dr Dan Siegel


Understanding this as adults allows us to view tantrums differently. They are not manipulative behaviours, even if others might suggest so. Neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett explains what occurs in the brain and nervous system in a way that gives us a clear and accurate understanding of a child’s experience. She states:


“We are most helpful if we can remain calm, breathe, and stay present alongside the child, as their nervous system recalibrates in response to the calm of our own nervous system.”

Our Role at

At , we remind ourselves that a significant part of our role as adults is to help our children feel safe. We seek gentle, compassionate ways to guide them in their behaviour. As our curriculum focuses on the healthy development of young children, we pay close attention to self-regulation.

We do our part to ensure children feel safe and secure, offering calm support when needed. This process, known as co-regulation, relies on our ability to provide a safe emotional space, laying the foundation for children to eventually self-regulate.

“อารมณ์คือการตีความྺองสมอง๶กี่ยวกับความรู้สึกทางกายที่สัมพัȨ์กับสิ่งที่เกิึϾึ้Ȩอบตัวเราในโลกĝ
